Cards Outlast Oilers in Home Opener

WHEELING, W.Va. – In the 2016-17 home opener, the Wheeling Jesuit women's basketball team outlasted the visiting Findlay Oilers, 71-63. The Cardinals outscored the Oilers by five points, 18-13, down the stretch.

Four of the five Cardinal starters finished in double figures led by Chenelle Moore's game-high 23 points. Monica Burns chipped in 20 points and has now crossed the 20-point mark in each of the three Cardinal games to date.

"We just beat a very good basketball team," WJU coach Debbie Buff noted. "We out-rebounded them (Findlay) 41-27 and had four players finish in double-digit scoring. We were able to make some great plays down the stretch. It was an all-around great victory for the program."

The Oilers began the contest on a 7-2 run and would lead 17-12 heading into the second period.

Findlay stretched its lead to seven points, 19-12, but the Cardinals claimed the next seven points, tying the contest with 7:55 remaining in the first half. Jaana Motton hit a pair of free throws and Kylie Frizell a jumper before Burns buried a trey, knotting the score at 19 each.

Findlay regained the lead, 26-22, before a pair of treys from Frizell and Mariah Callen sent WJU ahead, 28-26. The Cardinals scored the last four points of the half and would take a 36-32 upper-hand into the break.

The third quarter saw both teams trading baskets before Callen added a pair from the charity stripe, putting WJU ahead 53-50.

Burns helped WJU to a six-point advantage, 60-54, midway through the fourth quarter. Motton added a bucket with less than two minutes remaining, and the Cardinals led by the largest margin of the game, 11 points.

Moore finished with a double-double, 23 points and 11 boards. The sophomore forward swiped two steals and blocked one shot in the contest. Burns added her 20 points, six rebounds and three assists to the Cardinal totals.

Callen and Frizell rounded out the double-figure scoring with 12 and 10 points, respectively. Callen dished out three assists, while Frizell secured six rebounds and handed out two helpers.

Motton grabbed a team-best 13 rebounds and scored six points.

WJU returns to the court on Saturday, November 19 at Urbana. The Cardinals and Blue Knights are scheduled to tip-off at 2 p.m.
