Cardinals Race Past Pioneers in Home Opener

WHEELING, W.Va. – After a tough opening weekend, the Cardinals team hit over the century mark in the friendly McDonough Center confines. The Wheeling Jesuit men's basketball recorded five double-figure scorers and raced past Point Park, 121-82 in its home opener.

The backcourt trio of Preston Boswell, Chase Lawson and Jarin Hilson combined for 62 points, 12 treys and 18 assists in leading the No. 7 Cardinals (3-0) to the non-conference win. After a Pioneers (0-4) opening second-half bucket cut the margin to a dozen, 56-44, the home team responded with a 15-2 run over a 2:34 period and never look back.

"Everyone played well. We had good balance any time you get five guys in double figures," noted WJU coach Danny Sancomb. "We want to continue to get better as the season goes on."

Freshman Boswell playing in his first collegiate home contest connected on 7 of 12 shooting, including 3 of 6 triples, for 23 points. He also pulled down seven rebounds and had two assists.

Lawson sank four 3-pointers in the opening four minutes of the game and ended with a career-high 20 points. For the night, he made 5 of 10 long-range shots and 7 of 15 overall, while he dished nine assists.

Hilson added four treys of his own on seven attempts for 19 points and seven boards.

Haywood Highsmith produced a double-double of 17 points and 12 rebounds, while Kyle Ritz had 16 points and eight caroms.

The 121-point WJU effort was its first time eclipsing the century mark since it defeated West Liberty, 106-83, last Jan. 21.

WJU scorched the nets early and went out to a 25-6 advantage in the game's first 6:09. Point Park pulled back late in the first half to 56-42 at intermission.

After the 15-2 home run early in the second 20 minutes, the WJU lead ballooned to as many as 44 points, 114-70, with 4:26 left in the contest.

Sa'iid Allen pumped in 20 points and paced the visitors.

WJU opens its Mountain East Conference docket Saturday afternoon, Nov. 19. The Cardinals play at the Blue Knights of Urbana in a 4 p.m. game.
