Cards Fly to Early Lead, Coast to Victory over Rams

WEST CHESTER, Pa. – After scoring the first 23 points of the game, the Wheeling Jesuit women's basketball team coasted past the West Chester Rams, 83-60, Sunday afternoon. With the win, WJU posts a 2-0 weekend mark with its other victory coming yesterday against Edinboro.

The Cardinals offense finished the afternoon shooting over 43 percent from the field, 57 percent from three, and 75 percent from the free-throw line. WJU's defensive front outrebounded the Rams, 42-37, and caused 19 turnovers.

"It was an all-around great team performance today," WJU head coach Debbie Buff remarked. "We jumped out to an early lead and never looked back. I thought we did an excellent job of sharing the ball, and I am very pleased with the way the weekend went."

For the second time in as many days, redshirt sophomore transfer Monica Burns led the Cardinals in scoring. Burns buried a pair of treys within the opening minute of play, and the Cardinals would never look back. Burns would finish the first quarter with four three-pointers made, the last coming with 3:12 remaining, capping the 23-0 WJU run.

The Cardinals continued to control the non-conference contest, as they managed to outscore the Rams, 25-17, in the second quarter, and would take a 52-23 lead into the half.

The visiting Cardinals' largest lead came at the end of the third period when WJU had doubled-up its opponent, 76-38.

Burns finished the afternoon with 21 points on six of eight shooting from three-point distance. Mariah Callen dished out six assists while scoring 14 points and swiping one steal. Marissa Tucker finished a perfect three of three from the field to join Burns and Callen in double-figure scoring with 11 points.

Jaana Motton added a near double-double to the WJU stat total. The senior post player scored nine points and secured nine caroms. Kylie Frizell added eight points and four rebounds while Chenelle Moore supplied WJU with seven points, five boards, one steal, and one block.

Aislyn Hartman and Khira Burton scored four points each. Lydia Hyburg and Taliah Cashwell finished with three and two points, respectively.

The Cardinals open their 2016-17 home season with a Wednesday evening matchup with the visiting Findlay Oilers. Tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m.
