Cardinals Storm Back and Clip Scots in Opener

Box Score WEST CHESTER, W.Va. – The second half belonged to the Cardinals. Monica Burns' 3-pointer propelled the Wheeling Jesuit women's basketball ahead of Edinboro for the final time with 1:26 left and completed the second-half comeback, 63-59, in the season opener.
 
Trailing by 13 points at the half, WJU (1-0) chipped the margin to seven, 49-42, in the third period. After a Scots (0-1) early fourth-quarter layup, the Cardinals rattled off a 13-0 run over the next 5:48 for a 55-51 lead. Burns provided five of her game-best 21 points on back-to-back possessions and WJU pulled out the victory.
 
"Great opening win against a very good Edinboro team. Our second half, we played disciplined and showed multiple defenses. Our veterans took over the game," stated WJU coach Debbie Buff. "Mo Burns, in her first collegiate game in the WJU uniform, hit some big-time shots. Our interior game with Jaana Motton and Chenelle Moore combined for 24 points and 17 rebounds. Overall, our team has worked so hard for this first win and we are very proud."
 
Redshirt sophomore transfer Burns downed 6 of 12 attempts from the field and 4 of 8 treys for her 21-point night. Burns also added five rebounds, three assists and three steals.
 
Moore, who made all five floor attempts, and Motton both showed strong on the inside. Moore finished with 14 points and eight boards, while Motton was right behind with 10 points and nine caroms.
 
WJU will attempt for a perfect opening weekend on Sunday. The Cardinals face the host Golden Rams of West Chester in a 4 p.m. contest.
 
Mariah Callen added nine points and five assists. Chelsea Richardson chipped in six points.
 
Edinboro received 11 points from both Whitney Allen and Ciara Roston.
 
The Scots produced the best quarter of the contest in the second period. Trailing 18-17, Edinboro posted a 21-7 advantage and took a 38-25 margin to halftime.
 
Down 51-42, Callen sank a pair of foul shots and tied the game, 51-51, with 4:35 on the clock. Motton dumped in back-to-back layups and edged WJU ahead 55-51 at 3:32.
 
Edinboro rebounded with two 3-pointers in a row and regained the advantage, 57-55, with 2:21 showing. Burns took over the WJU heroics from there.
