Cardinals Fend off Golden Eagles, Complete 4th-Straight Perfect MEC Season

CHARLESTON, W.Va. – In a potential preview of the Mountain East Conference Tournament Championship next weekend, the Wheeling Jesuit volleyball fended off the University of Charleston, 3-1, Saturday afternoon. With the victory, the Cardinals completed their fourth-straight perfect MEC regular season in a row.

After the Golden Eagles (24-12/12-4 MEC) won the bonus volleyball first set 28-26, the No. 5 Cardinals rattled off set wins in the next three sets by scores of 25-20, 25-19, 25-16. WJU put a cap on its effort by scoring the final nine fourth-set points to end the match.

"I thought our defense propelled us in some long rallies and Kayce (Krucki) came up big in critical moments," noted WJU coach Christy Benner of her team's effort.

With the victory, WJU finished as MEC Regular Season champions at 16-0. The Cardinals move on to host the MEC Tournament next Thursday through Saturday, Nov. 17-19. Matchups and match times to be announced in the next day.

"I am very happy for this team to win the last match of the regular season for it has been a long journey since we opened in West Florida," added Benner.

Krucki led the WJU defensive effort with 29 digs from her libero position.

Haley Kindall continued her top-notch play with 19 kills, including three kills and a block assist in the nine-point run to end the match. The senior middle blocker also hit .444 with five block assists.

Lauran Graves pounded 14 kills of her own at a .429 rate with three digs and a pair of block assists. Maddy Smyth downed eight kills and three block assists.

Setter Andrea Thobe recorded her second 50-plus assist match with 51 to go with 11 digs for the double-double.

Breanna Kramer and Emma Schleucher contributed all-around. Kramer dug 17 attacks and hit seven kills, while Schleucher had 13 digs, six kill, two block assists and two assists.

In the opening set trailing 19-12, Charleston battled back with a 12-3 run to tie the match, 22-22. The home squad outlasted the Cardinals for the 28-26 win.

Tied 17-17 in set two, WJU received a Smyth kill and a Charleston attack error to edge ahead, 19-17. The visitors continued to lead 23-20, before Graves hit a winner and a Golden Eagles miscue tied the match, 1-1.

Graves and Kramer both lined three kills and helped WJU run out to a 9-3 set three start. The Cardinals never led by fewer than three points the rest of the 25-19 set.

In set four tied at 16-16, the Cardinals ended the match with the final nine winning points. Kindall downed three of the points and teamed with Smyth to block another.
