Cardinals Work Past Warriors, Post 2nd Win of Opening Weekend

SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va. – After being stuck in neutral from the tip, the Cardinals threw it in gear and took off. The Wheeling Jesuit men's basketball team worked past East Stroudsburg, 78-67, and posted its second win of the opening weekend at the Clarion Hotel Conference Challenge.

The Warriors (0-2) scored the lone eight points of the first four minutes, but the Cardinals rebounded and took charge mid-first half. With a 10-point halftime lead, WJU extended the margin to as many as 22 points and coasted home.

"We need to get off to a better start, but we did a nice job when we settled in," said Cardinals coach Danny Sancomb. "Chase Lawson and Pat (Moseh) played well on both ends. I thought our bench played well with Jarin (Hilson) and Preston (Boswell), along with Matt (Stewart) and Dom (Tham) did a nice job. It was a nice win for us."

WJU produced a balanced offensive attack with five double-digit scorers. Moseh led the group with 14 points to go with five rebounds, five assists and a pair of steals. Lawson downed 4 treys as part of his 13 points.

Haywood Highsmith had an eight-point and seven-rebound second half and finished with a double-double of 10 points and 11 caroms. Kyle Ritz added 12 points on 4 of 8 from the floor with six rebounds. Stewart hit for 10 points off the bench.

Boswell chipped in seven points and Hilson had three assists.

The Cardinals shot 60-percent (12 of 20) in the second half to pull away from the Warriors. WJU also turned up the second-half defense as it held ESU to 9 of 29 (31%) from the floor.

Over the opening four minutes, ESU scored four layups with two coming after steals for an 8-0 lead. WJU chipped away at the margin until a Ritz tripled at 11:17 tied the game, 13-13.

Stewart tipped in the go ahead WJU basket for a 15-13 score as part of an 8-0 run. The difference went to a 40-30 Cardinals favor by intermission.

A Highsmith 3-pointer extended the WJU advantage to 22 points, 71-49, with 6:27 remaining and coasted from there.

WJU makes its McDonough Center debut Tuesday night when Point Park comes to Wheeling. Tip-off is set for 7 p.m.
