Cardinals Solid in Opener, Defeat The Rock

SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va. – Behind a strong first-five minutes, the Wheeling Jesuit men's basketball team played solid in the season opener and defeated Slippery Rock, 71-53, at the Clarion Hotel Conference Challenge Friday night on the Shepherd University campus.

The No. 7 Cardinals (1-0) opened the night with a 10-2 run and doubled the margin by halftime, 31-17, en route to the victory over The Rock (0-1).

Haywood Highsmith sliced for a game-high 23 points on 9 of 12 shooting with nine rebounds, three assists and a block. Pat Moseh produced a quality night of his own with 19 points, including making both 3-point attempts, to go with five assists and three steals.

"It was a great team win," said WJU coach Danny Sancomb. "We played well on the defensive end. We shared the ball well. Pat (Moseh), Kyle (Ritz) and Haywood (Highsmith) did a nice job scoring the ball."

Leading 31-17 coming out of the half, WJU erased any doubt of a Slippery Rock comeback. The Cardinals netted the first six points and extended their margin to 23 points, 43-20, via the 12-3 spurt.

The Rock pulled no closer than 13 points twice, 43-30 and 45-32, over the final 13 minutes of action.

Forward Kyle Ritz finished as the third WJU double-figure scorer with 11 points on 4 of 5 from the floor with six boards. F

Freshman Preston Boswell chipped in seven points in his first game, while Drake Goddard added five points.

The Rock received 13 points from Christal Malalu for their high-point producer.

WJU moves on to face the No. 9 rated team in the Atlantic Region, East Stroudsburg, on Saturday at 5 p.m.
