Cardinals Give Falcons 1st MEC Loss, Sweep Huskies

WHEELING, W.Va. – For the 10th and 11th times in the last 12 matches, the Cardinals recorded straight-set wins. Opening the day, Wheeling Jesuit gave rival Fairmont State its first Mountain East Conference loss and finished with a sweep of Michigan Tech.

After two set wins of 25-14, the No. 5 Cardinals (19-2/6-0 MEC) rebounded from a seven-point third-set deficit and grabbed a 25-23 victory over the Falcons (11-7/5-1 MEC). In the late match, WJU took a 'workman-like' three sets (25-18, 25-19, 25-19) over Michigan Tech (8-10).

Haley Kindall patrolled the middle for WJU with a combined 22 kills and 10 total blocks in the two matches. Breanna Kramed downed 24 kills and dug 19 attacks. Andre Thobe guided the offense with an 82 assist and 18 digs totals.

WJU begins its second round of MEC play on Wednesday night. The Cardinals trek up the hill for a 7 p.m. match at the Hilltoppers of West Liberty.
