Cardinals Post 20th Victory, Sweep ‘Toppers

WEST LIBERTY, W.Va. – For the 15th-straight year, the Cardinals recorded their 20th volleyball win of the season Wednesday night. Wheeling Jesuit controlled its rival West Liberty in a 3-0 straight-sets victory.
 
The No. 4 Cardinals (20-2/7-0 Mountain East Conference) used a fast first-set start and two midset runs in the two latter sets for the 25-14, 25-16 and 25-14 win over the Hilltoppers (14-11/2-5 MEC).
 
The WJU victory sealed the 15th-year in a row for at least 20 victories under the direction of head coach Christy Benner
 
Junior outside hitter Maddy Smyth clubbed a match-high 10 kills without an error in 15 attacks for a .667 hit percentage and two block assists. Emma Schleucher downed seven kills, hit .462, dug four attacks, totaled three total blocks to go with an assist and an ace. The two Cardinals hitter helped the team post a .412 team attack percentage with only six errors.
 
Kayce Krucki and Sam Obringer paced the visitors' defensive effort with 21 and 15 digs, respectively.
 
Andrea Thobe added 39 assists, four digs, two kills and an ace. Haley Kindall lined seven kills.
 
West Liberty received eight kills from Stephanie Leonard.
 
WJU started fast with the match's first four points and went out to a 7-1 first set advantage. Leading 15-11, Smyth blasted three kills in a five-point spurt for a commanding 20-11 lead.
 
In the second set, West Liberty was toe-to-toe, 11-11, with WJU. Lauran Graves, Smyth and Kindall downed back-to-back-to-back winners and the Cardinals went on for a 12-3 final run.
 
With a 15-10 third-set lead, WJU put the next six of seven points on the scoreboard for a 21-11 margin, before the match-deciding 25-14 final.
 
WJU returns home for a pair of Saturday matches – noon vs. West Virginia Wesleyan and 2 p.m. against Glenville State.
