Fortunate Bounce Helps Bobcats Past Cardinals

WHEELING, W.Va. – On a damp Bishop Schmitt Field turf, West Virginia Wesleyan took advantage of a fortunate first-goal bounce and held on for a 2-0 men's soccer victory over Wheeling Jesuit Friday night.

In a tight scoreless contest, the Bobcats' Juwon Akintunde's free kick from the left sideline bounced off a Cardinals' defender into the net for an own goal at 10:40. WJU (4-8/2-5 Mountain East Conference) saw each of its five hard shots on goal turned away by the West Virginia Wesleyan (6-5/5-3 MEC) keeper.

The Cardinals Brent Pedlow accounted for four of his team's five shots on goal, including a header saved in the second half. Teavon Spencer added the final home shot on goal.

Leading 1-0 midway through the second half, West Virginia Wesleyan's Paul Smith headed in a corner kick for the match's second score.

WJU goalie Matt McCormick registered seven saves.

The Cardinals next host MEC rival Concord Thursday, Oct. 13, in a 5:30 p.m. match.
