Hawkins Early Goal Not Enough for WJU Men’s Soccer

WHEELING, W.Va. – In a non-conference under the Tuesday night lights, a Wheeling Jesuit strong start and Owain Hawkins goal proved to not be enough as California University of Pennsylvania turned the tide for a 3-1 victory.

In just the eighth minute of action, Hawkins put the Cardinals (4-7) on the board by way of a free kick. Hawkins gave WJU the early 1-0 advantage after his shot hooked its way past the Vulcans (6-3-1) keeper and into the back of the net.

California tied the match three minutes after the WJU goal. The Vulcans managed to head in a goal in the 11th minute and scored what would become the game-winning goal with seven minutes (38:56) remaining in the first half. The Vulcans added an insurance goal in the 77th minute.

On the night, WJU was unable to take advantage of a 17-12 final shot total. Goalie Tyler Shotwell posted two saves in his third start of the year.

WJU returns to Mountain East Conference play on Friday, October 7, when it hosts West Virginia Wesleyan at 8:00 p.m.
