Cardinals Volleyball Take Saturday Road Pair

PAINESVILLE, Ohio – Stepping out of conference action, the Cardinals kept their ball rolling. The Wheeling Jesuit volleyball team swept past Wayne State, before it took the final three sets of a 3-1 victory over Lake Erie in the late match.

The No. 5 Cardinals (28-2) had a rough hitting match, but they prevailed 25-19, 25-21 and 25-19 over the Warriors (18-7). After it dropped the opening set (19-25), WJU rallied strong for 25-16, 25-18 and 25-11 set wins from Lake Erie (16-13).

"I am very pleased to get two wins on the road at this point in the season. I was happy with how the team responded under adversity and bounced back from dropping the first Lake Erie set," said Cardinals coach Christy Benner.

Mountain East Conference co-Player of the Week Haley Kindall continued her torrid run with 25 kills and hit .500 on 44 swings. Maddy Smyth equaled her teammate's output in both matches with nine first-match kills and 16 in the second.

Lauran Graves downed 11 second-match kills and hit .647, while Sydney Obringer totaled nine kills in the late match of her own.

Andrea Thobe amassed 95 set assists and 23 digs and Kayce Krucki produced 31 digs.

WJU hosts the University of Indianapolis in a 5 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 1, non-conference match.

Vs. Wayne State, 3-0 (25-19, 25-21, 25-19)

Tied at 7-7 in the first set, WJU scored the next three points and increased the new-found lead to 17-9 off a Kindall kill. The Warriors pulled no closer than six points the rest of the set.

A Kindall kill and two Wayne State attack errors was enough room for WJU to take the lead for good in set two.

The Warriors committed six-straight set three errors and pushed the Cardinals ahead 11-4. WJU went on and closed out the match with the 25-19 set score.

Vs. Lake Erie, 3-1 (19-25, 25-16, 25-18, 25-11)

Tied at 13 in the opening set, the Storm went on a 9-2 spurt and claimed the eventual win 25-19.

The Cardinals answered in set two with a 7-1 mid-set run and opened a 13-6 lead. Smyth downed three of WJU's final four points and evened the match after the 25-16 set two final.

WJU turned a slim 10-9 deficit into a 18-13 lead on a Graves kill. The margin increased to 23-15, before the 25-18 final.

The Cardinals ran out to a 13-3 commanding fourth set lead and breezed home in the 25-11 score.
