Cardinals Outplay Falcons, but Fall 1-0

SOUTH EUCLID, Ohio – Playing for their post season lives, the Cardinals laid it all out on the Sunday pitch. Wheeling Jesuit outplayed host Notre Dame College, but failed to convert and fell 1-0 in Mountain East Conference action.

WJU (6-10/4-7 MEC) missed on a penalty kick and three other prime scoring chances only to come up empty. The Cardinals' Brent Pedlow missed wide with 53 seconds left in the match on a final game-tying scoring attempt. Notre Dame College's Leonardo Paiva made the lone goal at 55:49 on a penalty kick.

"The men played for their playoff lives today and deserved to win," pointed out WJU coach Jim Regan. "We missed a penalty and three other quality chances."

WJU outshot Notre Dame College (9-4-1/8-2-1 MEC) 17-7 for the match and 5-4 in shots on goal.

Will Rector saw his close shot fly wide (54:31) after a Falcons' yellow card. Teavon Spencer's shot was saved (75:06) directly following another home yellow card.

Pedlow and Matt Vogt both booted four shots and Daniel Undreiner three in the Cardinals offensive effort.

Goalie Matt McCormick saved three Falcons shots.

WJU finishes its 2016 schedule with two final home matches. The Cardinals have the first of the two Wednesday night, Oct. 26, against the Blue Knights of Urbana at 7:30 p.m.
