WJU Handles Shepherd

SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va. – After the opening set, the Cardinals took control. The Wheeling Jesuit volleyball team handled host Shepherd University, 3-0, Friday night in Mountain East Conference action.
 
The No. 5 Cardinals (24-2/10-0 MEC) allowed only 20 points by the Rams (8-15/3-6 MEC) over the second and third sets in the 25-17, 25-8, 25-12 victory.
 
WJU posted an over .400 hit percentage over the three sets for the ninth time this season and fourth in the last five matches. The visitors attack belted 47 kills with six errors in 84 attacks for an impressive .488 percentage.
 
Haley Kindall and Sydney Obringer paced the Cardinals with a combined 17 kills, nine and eight, without an error in 27 attacks for a .630 percentage.
 
Breanna Kramer and Katie Campbell held their own with eight kills apiece. Kramer dug seven attacks and was part of three blocks, while Campbell had a solo block.
 
Andrea Thobe handed out 39 assists with Kayce Krucki recorded 11 digs. Sam Obringer and Emily Reedy chipped in six digs apiece.
 
Trailing 13-10 in the opening set, the Rams rallied for a 13-13 tie. The Cardinals answered their host with five-straight tallies and eventual 25-17 win.
 
WJU raced out to a 9-1 second set lead and never let Shepherd gain any composure in the 25-8 final.
 
The Cards equaled their effort in the third set with an early 10-2 advantage. The Rams pulled to within 16-10, but the visitors scored nine of the final 12 points and ended the match on an Emma Schleucher winner.
 
WJU completes it two-match MEC weekend road swing Saturday. The Cardinals play at the Falcons of Fairmont State in a 4 p.m. first serve.
