Cardinals Outlast Lady Cats in Five

WHEELING, W.Va. – In an intense match, the Wheeling Jesuit volleyball team outlasted upset-minded Pitt-Johnstown, 3-2, in five sets.
 
After the Lady Cats (15-6) took set four (25-22), the No. 5 Cardinals (23-2) ran off five-straight fifth-set points and opened a 10-3 lead. At 12-6, WJU took advantage of two UPJ miscues before Lauran Graves pounded the match-winner and 15-6 final. 
 
The Cardinals win (23-25, 25-22, 25-14, 22-25, 15-6) extended their win streak to 16 matches.
 
Haley Kindall downed a WJU best 17 kills, hit .556 for the night and added two blocks. Breanna Kramer contributed 15 kills and eight digs, while Graves accounted for 11 kills and three blocks of her own.
 
Setter Andrea Thobe dished out 49 assists to go with two kills and two block assists. Kayce Krucki and Sam Obringer dug 14 UPJ attacks.
 
UPJ received 18 and 16 kills from Maura Brehl and Cambria Wierman, respectively.
 
WJU has off until it travels to Shepherd Friday, Oct. 21, for a 6 p.m. match.
 
In set one tied at 22, the Lady Cats had back-to-back kills and held on for the 25-23 win.
 
After a Graves kill, the Cards led set two, 19-14. UPJ battled back to 19-17, but WJU had enough on an Emma Schleucher winner for a 25-22 victory to tie the match, 1-1.
 
Down 11-10 midway through the third set, WJU rattled off eight points in a row for an 18-11 lead. The Cards finished the set win and went ahead, 2-1, by a 25-14 margin.
 
Tied at 22 in set four, UPJ accepted two points off WJU miscues with a Wierman kill between for a 25-22 win to force set five.
