Cardinals Race Out of Halftime, Coast Past Yellow Jackets

INSTITUTE, W.Va. – After posting a strong final two first-half minutes, Wheeling Jesuit raced out of halftime for the game-deciding 12-1 run and coasted past West Virginia State, 97-74, in Mountain East Conference men's basketball.

Leading 30-29, Chase Lawson's second of his five 3-pointers completed a 9-1 spurt over a minute period as the Cardinals built a 39-32 intermission advantage. WJU (19-1/12-1 MEC) could not be stopped by West Virginia State (5-13/3-10 MEC) in the first three second-half minutes. Kyle Ritz and Haywood Highsmith combined for all 12 points of the deciding 12-1 run, broke open the contest, 51-33, and were unchallenged the final 16 minutes of the night.

"It was a nice win, but we need to come out ready to play," stressed WJU head coach Danny Sancomb. "We moved the ball well with 29 assists and rebounded the ball at a high rate. Pat (Moseh), Eric (Siefert), Kyle and Haywood all had good nights, while Chase added a punch off the bench."

Highsmith provided a big early second-half scoring dose with 14 of his team-high 18 points. The sophomore made 7 of 10 shot attempts, while he grabbed six rebounds and blocked three shots.

The Jesuit Basketball Spotlight National Player of the Week, Moseh posted his fourth double-double in a row. The second-year guard dumped in 16 points and pulled down 14 rebounds. He also handed out five assists and stole five passes.

Ritz contributed 14 points, seven in the opening second-half run, and hauled in eight boards.

Eric Siefert missed his own double-double by one assist with nine to a single turnover and had 10 points. The senior added six rebounds.

Lawson drained 5 of 8 trey attempts and finished with a season-best 17 points.

The Yellow Jackets' Awwal Reid paced the home team with 14 points.

In a slow starting game on the scoreboard, West Virginia State broke a 14-14 tie with seven points in a row for a 21-14 advantage with 7:31 left in the first half. WJU outscored the home team 25-11 over the remainder of the first 20 minutes for a 39-32 score.

At the end of the 12-1 second-half run, Highsmith kept the WJU scoring train rolling with an offensive rebound, tipped in and converted a 3-point play for the largest lead to that point, 56-36.

Lawson downed his first of three second-half 3-pointers and extended the difference to 68-43. The Cardinals eased home with their 14th win in a row.

WJU returns to its home McDonough Center for a 4 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 30, contest against the University of Charleston.
