No. 5 WJU Completes Season Sweep of Charleston

WHEELING, W.Va. – In a battle the whole afternoon, the No. 5 ranked Wheeling Jesuit Cardinals held the University of Charleston at bay and completed the men's basketball season sweep in a 79-66 victory Saturday afternoon.

The Cardinals posted their 20th victory of the season and 15th 'W' in a row. WJU is now 20-1 and remained tied with No. 2 Fairmont State at 13-1 atop the Mountain East Conference standings. The Wheeling Jesuit win also sealed the season sweep of Charleston after a 71-62 win in the state's capital on Jan. 4.

At 10:45 left in the first half, Justin Fritts downed his lone 3-pointer of the day for a 15-13 WJU lead. The Cardinals led the rest of the way, but they did not enjoy a lead more than 12 points and only a three-possession advantage the majority of the second half until the final seconds.

"It was a good hard win for us. We had to work hard to get this one," admitted Cardinals head coach Danny Sancomb. "Haywood (Highsmith), Pat (Moseh) and Eric (Siefert) all played well. Our defense and rebounding was the key today."

Moseh continued his strong play with a game-high 21 points, including 10 for 12 from the foul line. The sophomore added seven rebounds and four assists.

Highsmith produced his 10th double-double of the season with 16 points on 6 of 10 shooting, a pair of treys, and 11 boards. Siefert missed joining Highsmith by one rebound as the point guard had 15 points and nine rebounds, while dishing three assist and stealing three passes.

The WJU defense forced 14 Charleston (11-9/8-6 MEC) turnovers and won the battle on the glass, 37-26.

The Golden Eagles received a 19-point and eight-rebound effort from forward Jevonte Hughes.

Charleston started strong and held the lead for the opening nine minutes. The visitors led by as many as four points twice, including 13-9.

After Fritts put the home team ahead, WJU increased the margin to double figures, 30-20, over the next five minutes on a Siefert 3-point play.

Charleston held tough and pulled to within five points on the second half's opening bucket and six points three other times in the first five minutes of half number two.

WJU, though, kept Charleston at arms length the final 15 minutes until the 79-66 final.

The Cardinals have off until traveling to Shepherdstown next Thursday, Feb. 4. WJU faces Shepherd in a 7:30 contest.
