WJU Handles Urbana, Wins 13th in a Row

URBANA, Ohio – Off the strength of a pair of first-half runs and five double figure scorers, the Wheeling Jesuit men's basketball team handled Urbana University, 87-68, for its 13th win in a row Monday night.

A Blue Knights' (1-16/0-12 Mountain East Conference) 11-0 run gave the home team a 21-13 lead, but it turned out to be short lived. The No. 13 Cardinals (18-1/11-1 MEC) answered with their own 10-2 spurt to tie, 23-23. Pat Moseh laid in the go ahead bucket from Haywood Highsmith, who swiped the ball, and Drake Goddard added a running jumper as WJU built a lead it would enjoy for the last 25:42 of the night.

"It was a nice team win. We did a great job moving he ball," noted Danny Sancomb, WJU's head coach. "Pat played well with another double-double, while Eric (Siefert) and Drake (Goddard) shared and shot the ball well too. Haywood did a great job on the glass."

For the third time in as many games, Moseh recorded a double-double. He led WJU with 19 points on 6-of-14 shooting and 6-for-7 from the line, while he grabbed 12 rebounds, 11 defensive and swiped three balls.

Siefert added his own double-double with 10 points, including three treys, and 10 assists. Goddard had a solid night with 13 points and handed out six helpers.

Highsmith pulled down 14 rebounds, seven offensive, netted nine points, had three assists and grabbed two steals.

Both Justin Fritts and Matt Stewart, who had a career-high, contributed 11 points off the bench. Stewart also had four rebounds. Kyle Ritz rounded out the Cardinals effort with nine points and five boards.

WJU continued its strong second-half play with 48 points against Urbana after it put 65 points on the scoreboard last Thursday against West Liberty.

The Blue Knights' Dimitri Abner had a game-high 20 points, while Jahmere Howze added 17 points and nine rebounds.

Leading 39-33 at half, the Cardinals opened their first double-digit advantage less than five minutes into the second stanza. WJU held a 47-40 margin when it ran off the next eight points, including a 3-point play from Stewart and Moseh layup on an inbounds pass from Goddard, for a 55-40 score.

The visitors' lead grew to 18 points, 62-44, and eventually to 24-point difference, 71-54, on a Dom Tham layup at 7:31. The Cardinals coasted home over the final seven minutes.

WJU continues on the MEC road where it plays at West Virginia State Thursday night, Jan. 28. The game tips at 7:30 p.m.
