Cardinals Withstand Pioneers Third Quarter Outburst

GLENVILLE, W.Va. – The third quarter of Wednesday night's contest between Wheeling Jesuit and Glenville State changed everything. Without the quarter, the outcome would have been drastically different.

WJU (12-2, 7-1 MEC) clung to victory, winning the contest 89-87 over Glenville State (9-5, 5-3 MEC).

The Cardinals managed to outscore the Pioneers 72-48 in the first, second, and fourth quarters combined, but Glenville State recorded an impressive run of its own. The third quarter was all Pioneers, as they won the quarter 37-15 and erased the 22-point Cardinal lead.

The matchup was tied heading into the fourth quarter, before freshman Damonique Patterson received a pass from Mariah Callen and notched the game winning layup with just two seconds remaining, securing the Cardinal victory.

"We played a great first half and grinded out the second half," head coach Debbie Buff stated. "We had six players score in double figures. It was a great win against a very athletic team."

Sophomore guard Mariah Callen recorded the best game of her young collegiate career. The Morgantown, W.Va. native netted 19 first half points on a perfect 7-7 shooting, giving the Cardinals their 22-point halftime lead. She finished the contest with 22 points.

WJU trailed Glenville State, 11-6, early in the first. The Cardinals took the lead, 12-11, with 4:21 remaining off a Taylor Lubinsky layup. WJU finished the quarter on a 10-4 run, and took a 22-15 lead into the second quarter.

Glenville State managed to cut the WJU lead to four with 7:52 remaining before WJU closed the half on a 20-12 run, capped off by a Callen layup as the clock expired.

The Pioneers seemed to not miss a shot in the third quarter as they tied the game at 72 with 40 seconds remaining.

The fourth quarter was the most balanced 10 minutes of the game. Jaana Motton netted the first four points of the quarter, before Glenville responded with a made three-pointer. The lead went back and forth, and the game was tied at six different points in the fourth quarter alone.

Kylie Frizell made a pair of free throws with 1:11 remaining to go up by two, but Glenville responded and tied the game with 15 seconds left. Patterson netted her layup, and sealed the Cardinal victory.

Jaila Bryant tallied 16 points, five rebounds, two blocks, one steal, and one assist in her 22 minutes of action. Frizell finished with 14 points and five boards. Chenelle Moore, Damonique Patterson, and Jaana Motton all finished with 10 points. Moore collected a team high eight rebounds, while Patterson contributed seven and Motton six. Lubinsky rounded out the Cardinal attack with four points and seven boards.

The Cardinals return to action on Saturday, January 16 when they travel to Concord University for a 2 p.m. matchup.
