Cardinal Defense Contains Mountain Lions

ATHENS, W.Va. – The Wheeling Jesuit women's basketball team picked up another Mountain East Conference road victory Saturday afternoon. The Cardinals went on the road to Concord University and defeated the Mountain Lions, 63-39.

The Mountain East Conference's best scoring defense displayed its best outing of the season. The Cardinals, (13-2, 8-1 MEC) who were averaging 58.9 points allowed heading into today's contest, managed to allow only 39 Mountain Lion (3-11, 2-7 MEC) points.

"It was an outstanding road victory to get to 13 wins. We played with great energy from top to bottom," head coach Debbie Buff stressed. "We put an emphasis on rebounding and our tempo, and we came out and played outstanding defense to hold Concord to 39 points. It was a great team win."

WJU recorded an all-around team effort on Saturday. 10 Cardinal players scored in the contest, while three finished in double-figure scoring. The Cardinals outrebounded their opponent 48-36 and forced 16 Mountain Lion turnovers, leading to 14 points.

WJU ended the first quarter on an 11-5 run, including five points from sophomore guard Mariah Callen. The Cardinals held an 18-10 lead heading into the second quarter, in which they outscored the Mountain Cats 16-6.

WJU began the third period on an 11-3 run. Jaila Bryant recorded six of her team high 13 points during the run, stretching the Cardinal lead to a game high 26 points. The fourth quarter was won 14-11 in favor of the Cardinals, leading to the 24-point victory.

Jaila Bryant paced the Cardinal offense with 13 points on 6-12 shooting while collecting six rebounds. Freshman Chenelle Moore contributed 11 points and six boards in her 19 minutes of action. Taylor Lubinsky completed the double-digit scoring for the Cardinals with her 10 points.

Lydia Hyburg finished with nine points and three rebounds. Kylie Frizell notched six points, pulled down seven rebounds, and dished out two assists in the contest. Callen knocked in five points, while Jaana Motton contributed three. Damonique Patterson, Cassi Stein, and Chelsea Richardson each contributed two points.

The Cardinals complete their road trip on Monday, January 18 when they face the University of Virginia at Wise. The contest is slated for tip at 5:30 p.m.
