Cardinals Dominate Second Half, Pull Away for Win Over Pioneers

GLENVILLE, W.Va. – Trailing for nearly the opening 29 minutes of the contest, No. 24 Wheeling Jesuit dominated the final 11 minutes and pulled away from Glenville State for a 99-84 men's basketball road victory Wednesday night.

The Pioneers (6-8/3-4 Mountain East Conference) twice held an 11-point first-half lead in a hot-shooting first 20 minutes and led 52-45 at half. The Cardinals (14-1/7-1 MEC) muscled their way to a key 10-0 run to run a one-point deficit into an 82-73 and never looked back. WJU added another 11-0 run and sealed the 15-point victory.

"We came out with low energy in the first half and they made us pay. We have to be ready to play," pointed out WJU head coach Danny Sancomb. "We did a good job on the offensive end. We shared the ball and had a great effort from Justin Fritts, Haywood (Highsmith) and Kyle (Ritz). Pat (Moseh) and Eric (Siefert) were very solid and Matt Stewart off the bench."

Highsmith powered the Cardinals' comeback. The sophomore registered a 15-point and 12-rebound second-half performance alone. Highsmith finished with 19 points on 5-of-9 from the floor and added 9-for-11 free throws. He also had a team-high five assists, a block and a steal.

WJU's other inside presence, Ritz also recorded a top-notch second 20 minutes. The junior hit for 10 of his 19 points in the second half and pulled down five of his eight boards as well.

Fritts and Stewart kept the Cardinals in the game with their first-half efforts. Fritts downed 12 points and Stewart seven tallies with both making a pair of treys. Fritts finished with a team-best 21 points, including 4-of-6 from long-range.

Siefert and Moseh rounded out the double-figure scorers with 16 and 13 points, respectively. The two guards combined for six assists.

Off a pair of 3-pointers, Glenville State netted the game's opening nine points. The home team extended its margin to 10 points, 22-12, at 13:24 in the first half.

Fritts drained his second triple for the first tie, 28-28, with 8:36, but WJU failed to take the lead and trailed by seven, 52-45, at intermission.

The Cardinals continued to be a second half team where they outscored the Pioneers, 54-32. The visitors' defense held Glenville State to 11-of-31 from the floor (31.4%) compared to 51.7-percent (15-of-29) in the first half. WJU also won the rebounding battle, 43-32.

WJU continues its road trip Saturday, Jan. 16. The Cardinals travel and play the Mountain Lions of Concord in a 4 p.m. contest.
