Cardinals Never Trail in OT, Prevail over Mt. Lions

ATHENS, W.Va. – A Haywood Highsmith layup 27 seconds into overtime gave Wheeling Jesuit a lead it did not give up and prevailed at Concord University, 85-82, in Mountain East Conference men's basketball Saturday action.

The Mountain Lions' Jametrius Wade sent down a dunk and completed the traditional 3-point play with 15 seconds to tie the contest at 77-77. After Highsmith's layup, Pat Moseh added two pairs of foul shots as WJU put the extra period's first six points on the board. Leading 83-82, Highsmith netted a second layup with 1:36 and sealed the Cardinals' 10th-win in a row.

With its 10-game win streak, WJU improved to 15-1 on the year and 8-1 in the MEC. Host Concord drops to 10-5 and a 5-4 league mark.

"It was a hard-played game. Concord played very hard and we were able to match their intensity in the second half," noted Cardinals head coach Danny Sancomb. "We had a good balance with five guys in double figures and we played good team defense. We have to get ready for Monday (at UVa-Wise)."

Highsmith posted his second double-double this week and fifth in the last six contests with 18 points on 8-of-13 shooting and 10 boards.

Along with Highsmith, the Cardinals had their usual scoring balance with four other double-digit scorers. Justin Fritts and Pat Moseh dumped in 14 points apiece, while Kyle Ritz missed his own double-double with 12 tallies and nine rebounds.

Eric Siefert chipped in 10 points on a tough shooting day to go with five rebounds and a pair of assists.

Wade paced the Concord attack with 19 points and eight rebounds. Rob Reed had 16 points.

Following a 34-34 opening half, the tight-knit contest continued for the third 10 minutes without either team leading by more than four points. WJU's Matt Stewart laid the ball in for a 55-52 score with 10:00 left in the game.

The Mountain Lions gained a four-point upper hand, 59-55, with the next seven points. The Cardinals answered with their own 14-2 run and 69-61 lead, the biggest of the game, at 5:31.

With 1:52 on the clock, Concord's 3-pointer pushed it ahead, 74-73. WJU missed two foul shots on the ensuing possession, but Fritts stole the ball and found Highsmith for a 75-74 lead.

After two Siefert foul shots made it 77-74 WJU, Wade drove the lane for the dunk and 3-point play for the Concord tie, 77-77. The Cardinals had three shots in the final five seconds that went off the mark and sent the game to overtime.

WJU completes its four road games in eight days on Monday night, Jan. 18, when it plays a 7:30 p.m. game at The University of Virginia's College at Wise.
