WHEELING, W.Va. – After the momentum had shifted with a Concord tying score, Wheeling Jesuit answered five minutes later when
Karly Judy booted the game-deciding goal at 68:21 for a 2-1 Mountain East Conference women's soccer victory Tuesday night.
Sophomore
Nikki Hillard took a downfield pass on the short right wing and tapped it over to Judy, who the freshman connected on her first collegiate goal from 15 yards away past the Mountain Lion goalie and the lead the Cardinals kept the final 22:19 of action.
"It was good to get our first win of the season at home tonight. The real story tonight is the work rate of our student-athletes," pointed out Cardinal head coach
Tyler Absalom. "We started quickly, gave one back, then battled to break the deadlock and earn the win. I'm very proud of their effort."
The WJU victory snaps an 11-game non-winning home streak since it defeated Concord by an identical 2-1 final on Sept. 28, 2013. The Cardinal win also is the first win since last October 15 in a 1-0 win at Shepherd.
Meghan Horan knocked in the first goal of the match. Horan blasted an approximately 35-yard bullet straight on past the Concord goalie for a 1-0 home lead at 16:06.
WJU outshot the visiting team, 16-9, and goalie
Holly Kraus stopped three shots on goal.
The Cardinals try for their second win in a row Friday afternoon, Sept. 11, in a noon match at Shepherd University.
