Cardinals Battle Rams to Scoreless Deadlock

SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va. – The Wheeling Jesuit women's soccer team battled Shepherd University Friday afternoon to a scoreless deadlock, 0-0.

WJU's Maria Tennant fired the best shot of either team in the two overtime periods when she sent a shot wide in the 96th minute to no avail.

The Cardinal defense and the stellar play from goalie Holly Kraus shined throughout the day. Krause had a season-high 11 saves and she denied five shots in the second-half's opening eight minutes.

"We put forth a great effort in terms of our work-rate. They (Shepherd) did well keeping us on our back foot a bit and we just never found our rhythm. At the end of the day, a tie away from home is an ok result," said WJU head coach Tyler Absalom.

The Rams (1-1-1/0-1-1 Mountain East Conference) outshot the Cardinals (1-2-1/1-0-1 MEC) by an 11-5 first-half margin and 29-10 over the 110-minute match.

Shepherd came out firing in the first half recording the first five shots of the game, but Kraus saved every shot, she faced to preserve the tie and recorded saves on the five shots in the first half.

Meghan Horan fired a shot on goal at the 15:09 mark, one of four in a five-minute stretch for WJU. Kristen Garland, Cheyenne Kuncher, and Morgan Jacobson contributed shots during this attack.

WJU returns to action when it travels to Fairmont State University on Sunday, Sept. 13 for a 2 pm match.
