Fairmont, W.Va. – For the second time this week, freshman Karly Judy connected on Wheeling Jesuit's game-winning goal as the team used a relentless attack and shut out Fairmont State 1-0 on Sunday afternoon.
With the win, WJU is now 2-2-1 and 2-0-1 in the Mountain East Conference, doubling their win total from a year ago.
"It was a long week for us travel wise, so to put forth this effort and get the win today was great," head coach Tyler Absalom stated. "We played with a lot of grit, we created a lot of opportunities, and Karly (Judy) was able to finish one off when we needed it most."
WJU outshot Fairmont State ten to five in the first period, but neither team could capitalize and score. Junior Sydney Lavengood recorded three early shots on goal for the Cardinals, while junior Meghan Horan added two shots to WJU's total.
Kristen Garland, Natalie Indermuhle, and Cheyenne Kuncher each contributed a shot to the Cardinals first half attack.
The Cardinal attack continued in the second half as sophomore midfielder Nikki Hillard blasted a kick in the 61st minute that was saved by Fairmont. In the 62nd minute, Kuncher saw a shot go wide as Hillard fed her with an open field pass.
Karly Judy blasted a shot off the post in the 67th minute, but the Cardinals were still scoreless.
The relentlessness of the Cardinals continued, and less than two minutes later Judy found herself with a break away open shot on goal. Judy found the back of the net, giving WJU a 1-0 lead.
The Cardinals went on to hold on to the one goal lead, outshooting the Falcons 20-8. Six players for WJU recorded two or more shots.
WJU senior goalkeeper Holly Kraus recorded her third shutout of the season. Kraus has allowed only five goals in five matches this season.
WJU returns to action when they play host to West Virginia Wesleyan on Thursday, Sept. 17, at 7:30 p.m.
