WHEELING, W.Va. – Concord University maximized its scoring chances and finished with a Mountain East Conference men's soccer shutout over Wheeling Jesuit, 2-0, on Tuesday night.
The Mountain Lions' Jonathan Hardman fired in his teams third-straight and second rebound on the same play for the match's first goal at 49:42. Max Simpson took the next Mountain Lion shot and made the most of it to seal the victory, 2-0, at 84:04.
Concord (1-1) was held without a first-half shot and scored its two goals on only four second-half attempts. The home Cardinals (1-1-1) failed to convert on six opening-half shots on goal of their 11 tries and came up empty on the night.
"They came in with a plan to sit back defensively and frustrate us and it worked," said WJU head coach
James Regan. "We had a few good opportunities in the first half to take the lead and change the game, but did not capitalize."
For the night, WJU outshot Concord, 17-4, and it held a 9-1 margin in corner kicks. Cardinal goalie Matt McCormick had two saves.
Aitor de Heredia and
Brent Pedlow both fired four shots with two on goal.
Matt Vogt added a pair of scoring tries.
WJU heads on the road next for a Friday afternoon, Sept. 11, 2:30 p.m. match at Shepherd University.
