KANEOHE, Hawaii – Hawaii Pacific dashed Wheeling Jesuit hopes of a women's soccer victory in the United States' 50
th state on Saturday. The Sharks answered the Cardinals' late second-half goal with two of their own over 11 minutes for the 2-1 victory.
After being held scoreless in the opener Thursday,
Cheyenne Kuncher connected on WJU's first goal of the season with an assist from
Meghan Horan at 65:47. Hawaii Pacific slipped a ball into the goal off a corner kick seven minutes later (72:11) and added the game-winner on a second corner at 83:21.
"We played much better today overall and the result certainly doesn't show the truth about the game. All that being said, the games in Hawaii have been a great test for us and we look forward to moving into conference play with a lot of momentum from today's performance," said Cardinal head coach
Tyler Absalom.
The Cardinals (0-2) registered only four shots in the game, while the Sharks (1-1) totaled 17. WJU goalie
Holly Kraus stopped nine HPU shots.
Kristin Eaton,
Kristen Garland and Horan accounted for WJU's other three shots along with the Kuncher goal.
Wheeling Jesuit returns to both the mainland and opens Mountain East Conference play on Tuesday night, Sept. 8, in a 7:30 p.m. match against Concord.
