Cardinals Fight Golden Eagles to Scoreless Draw

WHEELING, W.Va. – The Wheeling Jesuit women's soccer team fought the Golden Eagles of Charleston to a scoreless draw in Wednesday night's match.

WJU (2-5-2, 2-3-2 Mountain East Conference) had various opportunities that they were unable to convert on. Charleston (5-1-3, 4-1-2 MEC) was denied by WJU freshman goalkeeper Hannah Thompson.

"I am happy with our effort and energy today," WJU head coach Tyler Absalom said. "I think we were extremely tough and creative in the midfield. We had enough chances but were unable to finish off a goal."

Thompson made her first career start in goal for the Cardinals. She turned away every Charleston shot and recorded 12 saves in the match.

WJU saw a great opportunity in the 16th minute of action when Nikki Hillard crossed a pass to Sydney Lavengood who was unable to finish off the goal.

The Cardinals had a series of opportunities early in the second period when they booted three shots on goal in a four minute span. Cheyenne Kuncher, Gabby Burchett, and Sydney Lavengood had shots saved during this time.

Kuncher led the Cardinal attack with four shots in the match. Lavengood and Burchett each added two shots of their own.

The Cardinals return to action Saturday, October 3 at 1 p.m. when they host Urbana University.
