Cardinals upset No. 1 Charleston, 2-0

WHEELING, W.Va. – Players and fans sprinted onto the field once the final horn sounded on the Bishop Schmitt Field to celebrate the Wheeling Jesuit men's soccer team's 2-0 shutout of No. 1 University of Charleston Wednesday night.

The Cardinals' Aitor de Heredia blistered the net for the first home score at 31:32 in the first half, before Matt Vogt headed the ball to Vince Faraji for the team's second goal (60:46). The top-ranked Golden Eagles belted 18 shots, including five after the second Cardinal goal, but failed to put a goal on the scoreboard.

"We executed the perfect game plan," exclaimed a victorious WJU head coach James Regan. "We sat back, absorbed their pressure and hit them on the counter attack. I am proud of the team effort tonight! Everyone came up big!"

The WJU (5-3-1/3-2 Mountain East Conference) victory came almost seven years to the day of the last win over Charleston (7-1/4-1 MEC), a 3-1 final on Oct. 4, 2008 – a span of 12 matches played over the time period.

The Cardinals also are the first team to defeat the Golden Eagles in a regular season match in 26 matches. WJU handed UC its first MEC loss since Oct. 26, 2013 and it is the first opponent to shut out UC since Oct. 16, 2013.

With its two goals, WJU equaled the amount of goals Charleston had allowed in all of its first seven matches combined. The Golden Eagles gave up only a single goal against Urbana and West Virginia Wesleyan and had shut out their last three opponents.

Wheeling Jesuit goalie Mathew McCormick stopped 10 UC shots on goal in a perfect night in net.

With the ball in the corner, Manuel Del Rio dribbled around a defender on the right flank, but lost the ball, which de Heredia picked up. De Heredia took the ball through three UC defenders and fired a rocket of a shot into the far right of the net for the first WJU tally at 31:32.

De Heredia missed a penalty kick wide at 58:34, which would have put WJU up by two scores. Only 2:12 later off an Owain Hawkins corner kick, de Heredia headed the ball to Faraji, who headed it into the right side of the goal for the insurance goal, 2-0, with 29:14 left in the match.

WJU stays at home where it will entertain Urbana University on Saturday, Oct. 3, in a 3:30 p.m.
