WHEELING, W.Va. – It only took an early incidental foul and the momentum swung away from Wheeling Jesuit Saturday afternoon. Slippery Rock converted a penalty kick in the seventh minute and added a second goal 11 minutes later and defeated WJU, 2-0, in men's soccer.
For The Rock, Ryan Lutke netted the penalty after the home foul at 6:37. Peter Boylan crossed the ball to Kyle Boyer at 17:27 for the second Slippery Rock (5-3) goal. Wheeling Jesuit (4-3-1) hit 10 first half and three second half shots, including six on goal, but it came away empty.
"We had a poor game today. You cannot have these types of games against a solid regional team like Slippery Rock," said Cardinal head coach
James Regan.
WJU's Aitor de Heredia booted two and headed a third shot attempt in the opening 30 minutes, which were all saved by the SRU keeper. De Heredia (55:15) and
Jordan Frommeyer fired the only two second-half shots on goal for the Cardinals.
Cardinal goalie
Mathew McCormick stopped two Slippery Rock shots.
Wheeling Jesuit remains at home to host No. 1 ranked University of Charleston Wednesday night, Sept. 30, starting at 7:30 p.m.
