Cardinals Spike Vulcans in Atlantic Region Title Rematch

CALIFORNIA, Pa. – In a rematch of the 2014 NCAA Atlantic Region finals match, Wheeling Jesuit repeated its success over California University of Pennsylvania in a 3-0 road sweep.

The No. 10 ranked Cardinals (11-3) hit a solid .321 and held the Vulcans (2-8) to .085 attack percentage on the way to scores of 25-17, 25-14 and 25-15.

"It was a big region win for us and a total team effort," said WJU head coach Christy Benner. "Sydney Obringer came in and gave us a spark and everyone truly contributed to this win over Cal."

Freshman Sydney Obringer racked up seven of her nine kills in the third set to help finish off the host Vulcans. Kayce Krucki downed four kills in the first set and five in the second of her game-high 12 to go with 13 digs. Jessica Thobe dug 16 attacks and served two aces.

WJU returns to the McDonough Center and Mountain East Conference action Friday afternoon at 4 p.m. against Notre Dame College.

Sydney Obringer killed two late points, before a Cal attack error finished the set.

Leading 12-7, a Jessica Thobe ace was sandwiched between a pair of Krucki kills for a 16-7 Cardinal set two advantage. Cal came with five points, but Katie Campbell pounded to key end of the set kills.

Sydney Obringer stole the show in set three. The freshman belted three kills of WJU's first eight points and seven of the squad's 17 points for a 17-12 lead. Krucki finished the night with a pair of kills of her own and a block assist to complete the three-set sweep of Cal.
