MEC Tournament Central

SALEM, Va. – The Wheeling Jesuit softball team earned the No. 4 seed in this weekend's Mountain East Conference Championship Tournament at the Moyer Complex in Salem, Va.

The Lady Cardinals finished the MEC regular season with a 16-8 conference record and fourth-place finish for the Friday through Sunday, May 1-3, tournament. No. 19-ranked nationally West Virginia Wesleyan is the top seed with a 22-2 MEC mark. Concord (19-7) and University of Charleston (20-8) claimed the second and third spots.

Wheeling Jesuit opens its first game of the double-elimination, eight-team tournament on Friday at noon against No. 5 seed West Virginia State. WJU will play either the winner or loser of the other noon contest between No. 1 West Virginia Wesleyan/No. 8 Shepherd at 5 p.m.

Wheeling Jesuit is trying to better its run to the MEC semifinals of a year ago. The Lady Cardinals rattled off three straight victories after losing its opening contest for a 3-2 weekend.

WJU (20-18/16-8 MEC) secured its first non-losing season in eight seasons since they posted a 27-18-1 record in 2008. The 2015 season is also the program's third year in a row with at least 19 victories.
