BRIDGEPORT, W. Va. – Wheeling Jesuit posted two big scoring frames and captured the four-game series finale at Fairmont State, 9-2, Sunday. The Falcons prevailed in the day's opener, 8-3.
Tied 3-3, Fairmont State (7-27/7-25 Mountain East Conference) used a four-run bottom of the fifth to take Sunday's game one. Wheeling Jesuit (11-22/10-18 MEC) put four runs to start the late contest with
Nicholas Pelegreen lining a two-run single, before
Dillon Sunnafrank homered as part of a five-run third in the victory.
With the finale win, Wheeling Jesuit records its second MEC series split in three weekends.
On the mound, Ben Standiford (2-5) produced a quality start. In six innings of work, he allowed nine hits and two earned runs, while he fanned two.
Kyle Rees pitched a scoreless seventh frame of game two.
Sunnafrank went 3-for-7 hitting to lead WJU. He lined a run-scoring single in the first game and a solo homer in the second.
Anthony Connacher doubled and singled, while both
Brock McGivern and
Tyler Kowalczyk had two hits. Pelegreen was 2-for-4 in the late game with two RBI.
For the first time in almost a month, Wheeling Jesuit plays at home next weekend. The Cardinals start a four-game series against The University of Virginia's College at Wise Saturday at 1 p.m.
Game 1 Behind 3-0, Sunnafrank put WJU on the scoreboard with a RBI single. Chris Brake added a two-run single to left center field to tie the game, 3-3, as Sunnafrank and Kowalczyk touched home.
Fairmont State jumped back ahead in the home fifth with four runs, before it took the 8-3 final.
Game 2 The Cardinals wasted no time to take control of game two. With one out, Connacher doubled and stole third base.
Patrick Ammar lofted a sac fly. After three-straight WJU hits, Pelegreen drove a two-out single to complete a four-run top of the first.
Leading 4-2 in the top of the third, Sunnafrank belted a solo home run as the big hit of the Cardinal five-run offensive trip for a 9-2 lead.
Standiford and then Rees needed no more help. The two Cardinal pitchers did not allow another Fairmont State run.
