Wheeling Jesuit Solid Play, Leads to Sweep of UVa-Wise

WHEELING, W. Va. – Wheeling Jesuit played its best day of baseball of recent weeks and swept The University of Virginia's College at Wise, 11-1 and 6-2, Sunday afternoon.

The Cardinals (13-22/12-18 Mountain East Conference) combined a Dillon Sunnafrank four-hit, six RBI effort with Justin Fritts' one-run, eight-strikeout first-game mound performance. WJU took advantage of five UVa-Wise (11-28/10-20 MEC) errors and saw Pat Ammar drive in four runs to complete the sweep.

Wheeling Jesuit's top five hitters accounted for 18 of its 19 hits in the two games. Sunnafrank and Ammar registered four hits apiece. Sunnafrank went 4-for-4 with a three-run homer and six RBI in the first game. Ammar produced two hits in each game and five total RBI.

Brock McGivern touched home plate five times and had three singles, while Anthony Connacher scored four runs and also drove three hits.

Joe San Felippo contributed three hits and three RBI to complete the WJU big hitting days.

Fritts improved to 3-3 on the year. The left-handed junior scattered five hits and one earned run with eight strikeouts over six innings of work.

Ben Standiford (3-5) tried to equal Fritts in game two. Standiford had a shutout until the final innings where two unearned runs scored. His line finished as seven hits and two strikeouts over a complete seven innings.

The two teams complete their four-game series Monday afternoon. The doubleheader has its first pitch at 1 p.m.

Game 1

In the top of the first inning, UVa-Wise came out swinging. The visitors lined three of their five hits in the game, produced a run and led for the only time in the twinbill, 1-0.

With one out in the home first, a San Felippo fielder's choice allowed Connacher, who walked, to tie the game. The Cardinals captured the lead for good on the next hitter. Sunnafrank blistered a ball over left field for a three-run home run to lead, 4-1.

Sunnafrank was only half done in the game. The sophomore added a two-run fourth-inning hit as part of a three-run at bat. He also contributed a one-run single in the home fifth for an 11-1 advantage.

On the mound, Fritts didn't need more than the four first-inning runs for the victory.

Game 2

The Cardinals opened a 4-0 over the first three innings and never looked back. Ammar singled home one in the first and lofted a sac fly as part of a three-run third.

In the home fifth, Ammar drove home the only two Wheeling Jesuit earned runs in the game with a single to center field for a 6-0 lead.

UVa-Wise struck with a pair of unearned seventh-inning runs, but it was not enough for the 6-2 final.
