WHEELING, W. Va. – Wheeling Jesuit put together a 10-hit attack and posted a three-run at bat twice to defeat The University of Virginia's College at Wise, 7-2, in the afternoon opener. The Cavaliers made sure it was not a 'Senior Day' sweep with a 5-1 late contest victory.
WJU (15-17/11-7 Mountain East Conference) scored three runs in the third and sixth frames to lead to the opening victory. A
Dana Achille solo home run helped give the four Lady Cardinal seniors –
Lorian Tharp,
Angie Reddick,
Victoria Vuljanic and
Sydney Mencke – a 'Senior Day' victory.
The Lady Cardinals could not take advantage of their second-game opportunities and the visiting Cavaliers (8-20/8-14 MEC) did. UVa-Wise put runs on the scoreboard in each of its final four at bats to record the 5-1 win.
At the plate, Wheeling Jesuit's
Morgan Stohlman went 4-for-7 with a double and two RBI to lead the home hitters.
Achille,
Victoria Scott and
Cassie Holstein all produced three hits. Achille homered, scored twice and drove in a pair of runs, while Scott doubled in a run. Kelci Thompson added a double and triple.
Mallory Chapman (12-6) logged both decisions in the circle. She fanned 17 Cavalier hitters over 12 innings and allowed three earned runs.
Wheeling Jesuit hosts West Liberty on Tuesday afternoon at 3:30 p.m. in its final home doubleheader.
Game 1 Trailing 2-0 in the bottom of the third, Thompson walked and raced home when Stohlman doubled to center field. Scott lined her own two-bagger to complete the three-run at bat for a 3-2 lead.
The Lady Cardinals added one fourth-inning score for a 4-1 score. Achille led off the home sixth with a solo home run to left field and Thompson tripled as part of the second three-run frame for the eventual 7-2 final.
Game 2 Behind 1-0 in the fourth inning, Achille loft a sac fly to score Scott, who singled, to tie the game, 1-1.
