WHEELING, W. Va. – After a tough Tuesday night loss, Wheeling Jesuit swarmed Ohio Valley and coasted to victory, 17-5, Friday night at Bishop Schmitt Field.
The Cardinals (7-5) found the goal three times in a 1:05 period for a quick 3-0 advantage. Leading scoring the final two goals to lead 6-2 after one period, WJU shutout Ohio Valley (0-13) in the second stanza and left no doubt of the match's eventual winning outcome.
As the entire roster playing in the second half, WJU received goals from 11 different players Friday evening.
Dereck Downs powered three goals into the net as the top goal scorer.
Matt Lee,
Duston Doudelet,
Tyler Wickett and
Matt DeVries all contributed two goals, respectively.
David Wallace,
Joe Wright,
Michael Jablonski and
Mike Stillings each added one score.
The WJU defense allowed only five goals while the trio of goalies –
Collin Smith,
Jake Lilly and
Kellen McMahon – faced 30 shots. The unit also forced 27 turnovers and scooped 37 ground balls.
Corey Luebbe, who also forced five turnovers, and
Evan Hodel snatched five and four of the team's ground balls.
Ohio Valley defended Wheeling Jesuit's 51 shots, 29 shots on goals of those.
Wheeling Jesuit caps its home schedule on Sunday with 'Senior Day' against Notre Dame de Namur. The first face off drops at noon.
