WHEELING, W. Va. – Lake Erie College found the net two times in the final 2:20 to edge the Wheeling Jesuit women's lacrosse team, 14-13, on Wednesday afternoon.
The Lady Cardinals (4-7) went ahead with 4:14 remaining on a
Markie Wright goal. The Storm (5-6) tied the game for the fifth time in the second half at 2:20, before Cecilla Spin connected on the game-winner with 1:03 in the game.
The WJU offense received three goals from
Olivia Krock to lead its scorers. Krock added three ground balls.
Jessie Tufnell,
Paige Plesich,
Kori Hickman and
Mary Burns found the net twice apiece. Tufnell assisted on two scores and Burns one.
With one score each,
Elizabeth Hales dished three assists and Wright had two.
In the even match, Wheeling Jesuit outshot Lake Erie by one shot, 29-28, and both squads committed 16 turnovers. Lady Cardinal goalie
Maire Austin stopped eight Storm shots.
Lake Erie's Anastasia Crawford led all scorers with five goals and one assist.
The Storm netted the match's first four goals over the opening 4:08.
The Lady Cardinals answered with five-straight goals to go ahead, 5-4, over the next seven minutes.
Trailing 9-7 at the half, WJU's Hales and Burns registered the match's first tie, 9-9, of the second half. The Lady Cardinals went on to hold three one-goal advantages, but they could never increase it.
Wheeling Jesuit hosts Notre Dame College on Friday night, April 17, at 5 p.m. in its next match.
