WHEELING, W. Va. – In the longest game of the season,
Mallory Chapman lined a 10
th-inning single through the left side to give the Lady Cardinals its second softball split of the weekend. Wheeling Jesuit took the opener, 3-2 in 10 innings, before Urbana University held on for a 5-3 late-game victory.
With pinch-runner
Amanda Mangelo on third with no outs, Chapman connected on a single to score the game-winner for WJU (13-13/9-5 Mountain East Conference). Urbana (8-25/3-11 MEC) notched five-straight hits to open the top of the fourth, scored all five runners and its lead stood for the second contest win.
At the plate, Wheeling Jesuit's Kelci Thompson drilled four hits and drove in two runs.
Lorian Tharp contributed a double and two singles.
Dana Achille drilled a three-run double, an opening-game single and two walks.
Chapman added a double with her game-winning single in the first game. She also recorded her 10
th win in the circle win to improve to 10-4. The freshman went 10 innings, where she struck out nine, while allowing seven hits, two earned runs and four walks.
Morgan Stohlman and
Cassie Holstein had singles.
Angie Reddick drew five walks in the two games.
Wheeling Jesuit has the week off until it host UVa-Wise next Saturday for a pair of games starting at noon.
Game 1 After no runs in two innings, the Blue Knights pushed two runs across home on three hits for the 2-0 lead.
In the home fourth, Chapman laced a double over the right fielder's head.
Karlee Leonard pinch ran and she was joined by Achille, who walked. Both Lady Cardinal runners scored on Thompson's solid single to center to tie the game, 2-2.
In the circle, Chapman held Urbana to two hits over the final six innings from the fourth through 10
th frames. She made herself the winning pitcher with her single in the home 10
th inning.
Game 2 All eight runs were scored in the fourth inning.
In the top of the fourth, the Blue Knights first five hitters lined hits and came around to score, before the at bat was over for a 5-0 advantage.
With one out in the bottom of the same frame, Tharp singled and Reddick and
Victoria Scott drew walks to load the bases. Achille lined a double to right center field to clear the bases to make it a 5-3 contest.
In the final at bat, WJU loaded the bases with two outs – Holstein walk, Thompson single and Stohlman reached on an error. Urbana pitcher Sierra Fent retired the final home batter to complete the visitor win.
