WHEELING, W. Va. – It turned out to be a successful return of Wheeling Jesuit's former head softball coach Melissa Frost. Her No. 10 University of Indianapolis squad took a pair of contests, 4-1 and 9-1, from Wheeling Jesuit on Wednesday.
The Greyhounds (32-8) scored a run in their first at bat and never trailed. The Lady Cardinals' Megan Stohlman belted a solo home run as part of only two game one hits for the home team.
The highly-ranked Indianapolis team posted two four-run frames in the late contest and allowed a single WJU (13-15) run in the six-inning eight-run rule final.
Frost returned to Wheeling, where she guided the Lady Cardinals to a 70-54 record from 2002-04. The coach has guided the Greyhounds to 411 victories since taking over the program in 2005.
For WJU, Stohlman's first home run of the year highlighted the eight hits in the twinbill.
Mallory Chapman lined a pair of game two singles.
Kelsi Thompson singled home the Lady Cardinals' lone second contest run.
Dana Achille,
Marissa Cangelosi,
Cassie Holstein and
Amanda Mangelo completed the hits.
Chapman had a solid first-game pitching performance. Over seven innings, the freshman gave up seven hits, two earned runs and struck out three.
Wheeling Jesuit will host The University of Virginia's College at Wise for its 'Senior Day' Saturday at noon.
Game 1 Indianapolis pushed across one run on three hits in the top of the first and added a pair of unearned scores for a 3-0 lead into the home second inning.
In the bottom of the third, Stohlman led off the WJU at bat with a solo homer to right field for a 3-1 score. It was the last Lady Cardinals hit in the contest.
Greyhound starter Morgan Foley walked one and a second Lady Cardinal reached on an error in the final five innings. Foley fanned 15 Wheeling Jesuit hitters.
Game 2 Trailing 5-0 with the bases loaded, Thompson drove home Cangelosi for WJU's only run.
Indianapolis added four runs in the top of the sixth and it held Wheeling Jesuit off the scoreboard in the home part of the frame to put the eight-run rule into effect.
