Jesuit Men’s Basketball Loses in MEC Semifinals to Fairmont State, 73-63

Box Score Charleston, W.Va. – With a trip to the MEC Title game on the line, Wheeling Jesuit Men's Basketball played Fairmont State in the last game of the tournament's semifinal round. 
 
The two teams split during the regular season.  Fairmont State defeated the Cardinals at Wheeling Jesuit on January 8th, 75-69.  Wheeling Jesuit traveled to Fairmont State on February 12th and dominated the Falcons 88-70.
 
Both teams battled through the first 10 minutes of the first half.  Fairmont State had a 21-17 lead and hit 53% from the field to start the game. 
 
The freshman duo of guard Pat Moseh and forward Haywood Highsmith led the Cardinals in the first half.  Moseh had 12 points and four rebounds, while Highsmith had 8 points and 7 rebounds.
 
The difference in the first half was shooting percentage.  Fairmont State outshot Wheeling Jesuit 50% to 29% from the field.  The Falcons also hit 44% of their three-point attempts in the first half.
 
Jesuit countered making 14 of 17 from the foul line and outrebounding Fairmont State 19 to 16 to keep the game close.  Fairmont State took a 35-29 lead into the intermission.
 
Fairmont State stretched the lead to 12 with 14:59 left to play on a drive through the lane by Nick Harney and one foul shot to follow. 
 
Jesuit cut the lead to 50-44 on a layup by Eric Siefert at the 10:00 mark.  At 4:56 Jesuit cut the lead to 4 on a breakaway layup by Siefert to make it 54-50.   
 
Fairmont State's Davis hit a 3 pointer to make it 57-50.  On Wheeling Jesuit's next possession down the court, Moseh scored on a drive from the right corner to the bucket, cutting the lead to five, 59-54. 
 
Fairmont State then came down court and Jamel Morris made a left handed bank shot to make it 61-54 with 3:19 left to play. 
 
Wheeling Jesuit could not convert on their next possession.  Fairmont State's Davis connected on a drive through the lane.  Davis was fouled and made the foul shot to put the Falcons up by 10.
 
Jesuit made two layups on their next two possessions, one by Fritts and one by Moseh to pull within six points, 64-58.
 
The game became a foul fest down the stretch with Jesuit testing Fairmont State to see if they could hit their foul shots. 
 
Fairmont State hit 9 of 12 foul shots at the end of the game to win 73-63.
 
Moseh finished the game with 20 points, nine rebounds, and five steals in 35 minutes of play.  Siefert ended the game with 18 points, five rebounds, two assists, and two steals.  Finally, Highsmith finished the game with a double-double for the Cardinals, scoring 13 points and pulling down 12 rebounds.
 
"We struggled tonight.  We take our hats off to Fairmont State.  Our players gave good effort and won the rebound battle.  They took away the things that we do well.  We did not shoot well and missed a few good looks in the first half," stated Head Coach Danny Sancomb.
 
The Men's Basketball program finished the season 21-10.  The program won 12 of its last 15 games and returns every starter next season.
