WJU Powers over Clarion, Advances to Regional Championship

WHEELING, W.Va. – A quick offense and solid defense helped Wheeling Jesuit volleyball power over Clarion University, 3-0, and return to its fifth-straight NCAA Division II Atlantic Regional championship match.

The Cardinals (35-4) went out to eight and nine-point first two-set leads for 25-14 and 25-16 wins over the Golden Eagles (22-17). Clarion battled hard in the third set, but it could not overcome a WJU 12-1 run and dropped the final set, 25-21.

"It was electrifying in there (the McDonough Center) and it was a great battled and I just loved it," said a victorious WJU coach Christy Benner. "We were aggressive and fast and wanted to be quick on offense tonight. We passed really well the whole match."

Benner's Cardinals went out to their 2-0 lead on the strength of hitting .382 and .429 over the first two sets. The home team also totaled nine team blocks and lined four aces.

Maddy Smyth downed a team-high 11 kills. Haley Kindall added nine kills and six block assists. Emma Schleucher and Lauran Graves hit over .430 for the match – .467 and .438 – with eight and seven kills and a combined five block assists.

Jessica Thobe had 14 digs and Sam Obringer 10 on the Cardinals defense. Andrea Thobe handed out 35 assists to go with seven digs, two block assists and a kill.

"Jess did a nice job as she was served to all game and Andrea set up the offense well all night," said the WJU coach.

In Saturday's night Regional Championship match, top-seeded WJU will face No. 6 Gannon in the 7 p.m. match. The Golden Knights (23-10) swept past No. 7 West Chester, 3-0, in the night's first semifinal.

"I am so excited for us to be back in the (regional) final tomorrow night. It has been a great experience so far, and I don't want it to end," explained Benner. "We haven't faced Gannon in a long time, but they have a great outside hitter Hannah Kren, who we will have to be aware of, and they do some nice things on offense."
