Cardinals Volleyball Holds Steady Against Gannon, Head to 5th-Straight DII Elite Eight

WHEELING, W.Va. – In the match of the weekend, Wheeling Jesuit held steady against a tough Gannon University Golden Knight team and claimed a 3-0 victory and fifth-straight NCAA Division II Atlantic Region championship.

The Cardinals (36-4) never trailed in the first set and worked its way to an eight-point lead, 20-12, before they took a 25-17 win. The Golden Knights (24-11) bounced back strongly and led by as many as five points four times, but the home club battled back for a 25-21 set win. WJU held serve for a tight third set win, 25-22, and clinched the title.
 
"I want to congratulate Gannon. They fought hard and are very well-coached," said WJU head coach Christy Benner. "I am proud of our women for hanging in there through the second and third sets as either one of them could have went either way."
 
WJU moves onto its fifth NCAA Division II Elite Eight in a row. The National Championship will be held at the University of Tampa in Tampa, Fla., next Thursday through Saturday, Dec. 10-12.
 
Junior right side Emma Schleucher shinned all night. The Findlay, Ohio product slammed a match-best 15 kills, hit .481, handed out four assists, dug four attacks, part of three block tandems and lined a service ace.
 
Haley Kindall and Andrea Thobe joined Schleucher on the Regional All-Tournament team. Kindall fired six kills and had seven total blocks, while Thobe dished 38 assists and dug 13 attacks for a double-double.
 
"It was great to see how hard we pushed through the match defensively," said Cardinals senior Alexa Brown.
 
WJU libero Jessica Thobe, who had 20 digs, added, "Gannon served really aggressively, and ultimately, we overcame that battle in the end."
 
The Mountain East Conference Player of the Year Kayce Krucki chipped in 11 kills and 10 digs.
 
The Golden Knights were led by Lauren Beck's 10 kills and Hannah Kren's nine kills.
