Cardinals Tough Down Stretch, Defeat Battlers

WHEELING, W.Va. – Every time the visiting Battlers made a surge, the Cardinals produced the answer. Wheeling Jesuit played tough down the stretch to defeat a game Alderson Broaddus men's basketball team, 88-77, on New Year's Eve afternoon.

Tied at 41 three minutes into the second half, WJU (10-1) ran off 11-straight points and maintained an advantage for all but 17 seconds of the final 20 minutes. The Battlers (8-4) pulled to within three points, 60-57, at 9:29, but Justin Fritts pumped an answering 3-pointer of the eventual 11-point Cardinals' win.

"We knew (this game) would be played extremely hard as they (Alderson Broaddus) are a good team. They exposed us in some areas we need to improve upon, but we gutted it out," said WJU head coach Danny Sancomb. "We were able to make small plays and good passes tonight as we only had eight turnovers."

WJU saw a trio of 20-point producers – Pat Moseh, Kyle Ritz and Eric Siefert. Moseh connected for a game-high 23 points, 16 in the second half, on 6-of-9 shooting and 10-for-11 at the charity stripe. The sophomore also had three helpers.

Ritz continued his strong play in the last few weeks. The junior forward made 8-of-9 shots and all five free throws for a season-best 22 points. He missed a double-double by one rebound as he grabbed nine.

"Pat was very important on both ends of the floor today for us. He especially attacked good on the offensive end on penetration," added Sancomb. "Kyle has been solid all year. He was great on the offensive glad, very active and was ready to play on the offensive end."

Siefert added three 3-pointers as part of his 20-point day. Fritts chipped in 12 points off the bench and handed out three assists.

Sophomore Haywood Highsmith posted his fourth double-double with 10 points and 12 boards to go with four assists.

The Cardinals will have to be Road Warriors in the next six games. WJU plays five of the next six away from the McDonough Center starting on Monday, Jan. 4, at the University of Charleston. Tip is set for 7:30 p.m.

"(With five road games coming up) We need to be ready to go. They (Charleston) swept us last year," Sancomb finished.
