Cardinals Turn up Late Defense, Take Down Golden Eagles

CHARLESTON, W.Va. – In the final 10 minutes, Wheeling Jesuit turned up the defense, made the most of its opportunities, and took down the University of Charleston, 71-62, in Mountain East Conference men's basketball Monday night.

Tied at 51, Justin Fritts lofted a floating jumper in the lane, before Drake Goddard and Pat Moseh netted back-to-back driving layups for a Cardinals' 57-51 lead with 8:07 in the contest. The WJU (11-1/4-1 MEC) defense took over from there as it held host Charleston (6-5/3-2 MEC) to 11 points in the final 10:36 and keyed the hoops victory.

"It was a hard-played game. We played hard and we made the plays when we needed to tonight," said WJU head coach Danny Sancomb. "We had good contributions from Haywood (Highsmith), Eric (Siefert), Kyle (Ritz) and Justin (Fritts)."

WJU sophomore Haywood Highsmith came up big with 19 points on 9-of-15 shooting and 10 rebounds for his fifth double-double of the season to lead the winning effort.

Eric Siefert connected on 6-of-8 attempts and a pair of 3-pointers for 14 points and swiped three passes. Justin Fritts added 11 points including all four of his free throws in the final 41 seconds to help clinch the win.

Kyle Ritz completed the Cardinals double-figure scorers with 10 points and grabbed eight boards. Drake Goddard and Pat Moseh chipped in seven tallies apiece.

The Golden Eagles were led by Cameron Dozier and Justin Coleman with 13 and 12 points, respectively.

In a rather low-scoring first half, Highsmith blocked a Charleston shot and laid the ball in off a Chase Lawson pass on the other end for a 29-26 advantage. A pair of Golden Eagles free throws made the intermission total, 29-28, in the Cardinals favor.

Starting the second half, Moseh found Ritz inside and passed to Siefert for a triple on the next trip as the visitors built an early 38-29 lead in the first two minutes. The WJU lead stood at 40-31, before Charleston rallied behind four 3-pointers to tie the game at 51-51 seven minutes later.

WJU heads home for a Wednesday night, Jan. 6, contest against West Virginia State. Tip is set for 7:30 p.m.
