Cardinals Sweep Past Rams, Advance to Atlantic Regional Semis

WHEELING, W.Va. – On the strength of three quick starts, top-seed Wheeling Jesuit swept past Winston-Salem State, 3-0, and advanced to the NCAA Division II Atlantic Regional volleyball semifinals for the fifth year in a row.

The Cardinals (34-4) defeated the Rams (22-8) by set scores of 25-7, 25-10 and 25-11. WJU jumped out to 7-1, 8-1 and 7-1 early leads before it took each of the three sets.

"I congratulate Winston-Salem State on a great year. We were fortunate enough to start quick and hit a high percentage tonight," said Cardinals' head coach Christy Benner.

Right side Emma Schleucher downed eight kills to lead the home frontline. Haley Kindall and Maddy Smyth added seven kills apiece. Jessica Thobe contributed 13 digs and three aces.

Teynia Sheppard paced Winston-Salem State with six kills.

The No. 1 WJU Cardinals move on to face No. 5 Clarion University, which secured a 3-1 win over No. 4 Edinboro in Thursday's third match. WJU and Clarion will play at 7:30 p.m.

"It wouldn't be the Atlantic Regional without us playing Clarion. They are big team and they are playing great right now," added Benner.

In the other semifinal matchup, No. 7 West Chester takes on No. 6 Gannon in a 5 p.m. match. The two recorded upsets of higher seeded teams in the Regional's first two matches. Gannon rallied past No. 3 Shippensburg, 3-1, and West Chester took care of No. 2 Pitt-Johnstown, 3-1.
