No. 8 Fairmont State Holds off WJU Men’s Hoops

FAIRMONT, W.Va. – After a late home run, No. 8 ranked Fairmont State held off Wheeling Jesuit Thursday night, 94-91, in Mountain East Conference men's basketball action.
 
Tied at 60-60 with 10:28 remaining, the Falcons (6-0, 3-0 MEC) went on a 15-4 run over the next four minutes to open a 75-64 advantage. The Cardinals (5-1, 2-1 MEC) pulled back to within four points, 86-82, with 1:31 to go, but could get no closer until a second left on two Justin Fritts free throws and fell short for the first time this season.
 
Fritts produced 21 points off the bench on 7-of-11 shooting and 3-for-4 from long-range to lead the Cardinals' effort. Pat Moseh added 19 points on 8-of-16 shooting and handed out six assists.
 
Haywood Highsmith recorded his third double-double in a row with 16 points and 10 rebounds, while Eric Siefert chipped in 17 points, six boards, five assists and three steals.
 
Fairmont State's Matt Bingaya led the home club with 20 points and six rebounds.
 
The Cardinals enjoyed a first-half lead for the opening 17 minutes. Off a Siefert layup from a Drake Goddard pass, the visitors edged ahead by seven points, 31-24, with 7:50 left in the half.
 
Trailing 31-24, the Falcons rallied with a 10-2 spurt to tie the contest at 34. Fairmont State continued it turnaround with the final five points for a 41-37 intermission lead.
 
The contest between top MEC teams continued to be close. After a pair of Chase Lawson free throws, WJU went back in front, 60-58, at 10:42 on the clock. Fairmont State netted the next six points to regain the lead, 64-60, and never gave it up over the final nine minutes.
 
Wheeling Jesuit returns home to the McDonough Center Saturday afternoon. Due to the hosting of the NCAA Atlantic Regional volleyball championship, the Cardinals will host the Rams of Shepherd University two hours earlier in a 2 p.m. tip-off.
