WJU Men’s Hoops 15-Point Run Propels Over Gannon

ERIE, Pa. – The Wheeling Jesuit men's basketball team used a nine-point half-ending run and added the opening six points of the second half to propel it past Gannon University, 85-60, Saturday afternoon.

Trailing 35-32, WJU (7-1) turned around the game with the 15-0 run over five-minute period and opened a 47-35 in the second-half's opening two minutes. The Golden Knights (2-7) battled back to within 10 points, 60-50, only to see the Cardinals outscore them, 29-10, in the final nine minutes and pull away down the stretch.

"We played well today. It was a total team effort," said Danny Sancomb, Cardinals' head coach. "We played very good team defense and rebounded the ball, shared the ball and shot the ball well. Gannon is a well-coached team and plays hard. Our team played hard and smart."

Haywood Highsmith paced the WJU attack with 18 points, 12 in the first half, on 6-of-11 shooting. The sophomore grabbed six rebounds and handed out four assists, while he blocked a pair of shots and swiped two passes.

Justin Fritts and Eric Siefert pumped in three 3-pointers apiece and scored 15 and 14 points in the game.

Forward Kyle Ritz chipped in 10 points, pulled down six boards and swatted two Gannon shots. Drake Goddard had nine points and Pat Moseh added seven with both guards contributing five rebounds and four assists.

WJU has two days off until it plays on Tuesday and Wednesday, Dec. 15-16, in Bayamon, Puerto Rico for a pair of games.
