Cardinals Clip Falcons, 88-84

WHEELING, W.Va. – The Wheeling Jesuit men's basketball saw its defense rise to the occasion when it needed and clipped Notre Dame College, 88-84, in Mountain East Conference action Monday night.

After hitting his ninth 3-pointer with 20 seconds left, Notre Dame's Tyree Gaither stole the ball and fired another trey, which Wheeling Jesuit's Haywood Highsmith towered for his 20th-rebound of the night. The Cardinals' Highsmith and Chase Lawson both made a pair of free throws in the final eight seconds and sealed the four-point victory.

WJU improved to 5-0 on the year and 2-0 in the MEC early season, while NDC dropped to 3-2 and 0-2 in the league.

"It was a hard-fought game. Notre Dame played extremely hard and they are really hard to guard," pointed out WJU head coach Danny Sancomb. "I felt we did a great job defensively throughout the game and it was the difference."

Highsmith, a sophomore from Baltimore, registered 17 points on 5-of-9 shooting to go with his 20 rebounds, three assists, three blocked shots and two steals.

Eric Siefert led the Cardinals with 20 points, while Highsmith's inside teammate Kyle Ritz added a strong 17 points of his own on 7-of-8 from the floor.

Justin Fritts chipped in 11 points off the bench.

The Falcons' Gaiter had a remarkable night. The 5-7 point guard hit nine treys and made 11-of-12 from the foul line for 38 points.

The Cardinals opened the night hot with the game's first five points and ran out to a quick 13-2 lead 6:41 into the game.

Trailing 18-4, the Falcons rallied with their own 16-5 spurt until they tied the game at 30-30 with 3:20 in the first half. The game went into intermission 34-34.

WJU ran out to two six-point leads in the first 10 minutes of the second stanza only to see NDC bounce back to tie three times and last occasion at 67-67.

The Cardinals, though, had one last game-deciding run in them. The home team netted the next nine points to make it 76-67 after Highsmith assisted on the first bucket, hit a 3-pointer and added a pair of free throws to cap run.

Wheeling Jesuit is now off until traveling to Fairmont State on Thursday, Dec. 3, starting at 7:30 p.m.
