Cardinals Finish Strong, Take 3rd-Straight MEC Title

WHEELING, W.Va. – In the most exciting championship in the league's short history, Wheeling Jesuit finished strong and captured its third-straight Mountain East Conference Volleyball Tournament Championship with a 3-1 victory over Fairmont State Saturday night.

After the last two editions only made it three sets, the Falcons (25-8) took the second set, 25-21, following the Cardinals (33-4) 25-19 opening-set win. WJU received Andrea Thobe service aces in a row as part of a four-point spur for a third-set cushion and win 25-22, before it ran away with the fourth set, 25-10.

"I am really happy with the victory and the way my team played. We actually had chemistry and worked through issues we had through the game," said Cardinals head coach Christy Benner.

Wheeling Jesuit will now wait for Monday night's NCAA Division II National Championships Selection Show to learn its playoff fate. The Cardinals were the No. 1 rated team in the Atlantic Region and hope to be one of the four regional hosts for the three-day regional on Dec. 3-5.

Andrea Thobe, Emma Schleucher and Kayce Krucki earned MEC All-Tournament Team honors. Thobe posted 52 set assists, 11 digs, five kills, four block assists and three aces. Schleucher had another all-around game as well with 12 kills, eight digs, two aces, three assists and a block.

The MEC Player of the Year, Krucki downed 14 kills, hit .351, dug 15 attacks and was in on three blocking duos to her night's credit.

"We knew we had to come out and play. We had played Fairmont State two times this season," said Thobe. "Our fans, especially in the last two sets, made a big difference for our support tonight."

Schleucher added about her serving, "I always want to try to impress our assistant coach Matt (Benner). I think I did tonight as sometimes it goes my way."

WJU freshman Sydney Obringer also stood out in the four-set championship. The outside hitter sliced 11 kills with only one error in 28 attacks.

Fairmont State had both Mackenzie Harrison and Erin Harwood post 13 kills each, respectively.
