WJU Second-Half Shooting and Team Balance Too Much for Urbana

WHEELING, W.Va. – After trailing by a point, Wheeling Jesuit owned the opening five second-half minutes and its team balance proved to be too much for Urbana in an 87-76 victory Saturday afternoon.

Compliments of Pat Moseh, Haywood Highsmith and Kyle Ritz, the Cardinals (4-0) started the second 20 minutes on what proved to be a game-deciding 13-2 run. The WJU spurt pushed it ahead, 50-39, of the Blue Knights (1-3), and never trailed the rest of the game.

"It was a good team win. We had six double-figure scorers and 21 assists as we were able to move the ball against their zone," pointed out WJU head coach Danny Sancomb. "We also did a great job on the glass."

Junior forward Ritz paced the six Cardinals double-digit producers with 22 points on 8-of-9 shooting from the floor to go with five rebounds and a pair of blocked shots. Justin Fritts downed four treys as part of his 16-point afternoon.

Highsmith notched his first double-double of the season with 10 points and 10 caroms. Moseh chipped in 11 points, eight rebounds and six assists.

Guards Drake Goddard and Eric Siefert completed the top home scorers with 10 points apiece. Goddard pulled down seven rebounds and had four assists, while Siefert handed out a game-high seven helpers.

In the key second half, WJU connected on 17-of-32 attempts (53.1%), including 7-of-11 from long-range. The home team also won the battle on the boards, 47-27.

Carlas Jackson topped all scorers with 25 points in the Blue Knights' losing effort.

With 9:59 left in the game, Fritts dropped a triple for the game's largest lead of 17 points, 62-45.

Urbana kept fighting and was able to pull within six points, 79-73, with 2:08 on the clock. A Ritz conventional three-point play answered for WJU on the next trip down the floor and squashed any visiting comeback hopes.

Wheeling Jesuit completes its home swing on Monday night, Nov. 23, when it hosts Notre Dame College at 7:30 p.m.
